Player Spotlight: Sophia May – Making an Immediate Impact

When the Sussex County Community College women's basketball team needed a play, a stop, or a leader on the floor, freshman guard Sophia May consistently answered the call.

In an outstanding freshman season, May quickly established herself as one of the premier players in Region XIX. She scored an incredible 631 points, becoming one of the most prolific scorers in the program while earning NJCAA All-Region XIX Second Team honors for her exceptional play throughout the season.

May's value to the Skylanders extended far beyond the stat sheet. She played nearly every minute of every game, demonstrating remarkable endurance, toughness, and an unwavering commitment to her teammates. Whether carrying the offensive load, making key defensive plays, or stepping up in clutch moments, she embraced every challenge without hesitation.

Statistically, May filled every category. She averaged 24.3 points per game, while also contributing 8.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 3.6 steals, and 1.2 blocks per game. She also shot over 80% from the free throw line, making her one of the team's most dependable players in pressure situations. Her all-around production made her one of the most complete players in the region.

What truly separates May is her relentless work ethic. Her commitment to improving every day has made her one of the hardest-working players in the program. Coaches and teammates recognize her competitive attitude, willingness to outwork opponents, and determination to elevate those around her. Those qualities allow her to thrive under pressure, consistently making winning plays when the game is on the line.

May's excellence extends well beyond the basketball court. She earned a 4.0 GPA during the academic year and will be recognized as an NJCAA All-Academic First Team selection, an honor that reflects the same discipline and dedication she displays as a student-athlete. Excelling at the highest level both academically and athletically exemplifies the standards of Sussex County Community College Athletics.

Despite being only a freshman, Sophia May has already made a lasting impact on the Skylanders program.
