Player Spotlight: Kelsey Birchenough – The Heart of the Skylanders Defense

As the Sussex County Community College Women's Soccer team prepares for another championship pursuit, one of the program's most important returning players is captain Kelsey Birchenough.

In her first season as a Skylander, Birchenough immediately established herself as one of the premier defenders in the NJCAA East District. The center back started every match for Sussex and played a pivotal role in leading the program to its second NJCAA National Tournament appearance. Her leadership and defensive consistency helped the Skylanders record eight shutouts throughout the season.

Birchenough's impact extended beyond defending. She also contributed offensively, recording assists from the back line and helping initiate attacks with her composure in possession. She registered two assists in Sussex's 10-1 victory over Lackawanna, highlighting her ability to influence the game on both sides of the ball.

Head Coach Mike Rath praised Birchenough's influence on the program.

"Kelsey is a key returner for us for this upcoming season. She is our captain and leads by example, whether it's her intensity in training, inclusion of her teammates, or her academic performance. She always puts the team first and is a crucial player for us in our pursuit of another National Tournament."

While her defensive qualities make her one of the top center backs in the region, Birchenough's leadership and selflessness have made her equally valuable off the field. She sets the standard for the program through her work ethic, commitment to her teammates, and dedication in the classroom.

A Psychology major at Sussex, Birchenough earned a GPA above 3.40 during the past academic year and will continue her academic and athletic journey at Ramapo College after graduating from SCCC.

For the Skylanders, Birchenough represents everything the program strives to be—competitive, committed, and team-first. As Sussex looks to make another run toward the national stage, their captain will once again anchor the back line and lead by example.
