The Sussex women's Soccer Team defeated Mercer County Community College to win the NJCAA Region XIX Division II Championship with a 2:1 victory after double overtime. This is the program's sixth Region Title after winning the championship in 2015, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022 previously. In what was a physical, hard fought battle Sussex opened the scoring in the first half after a strike from outside the box from Candela Sancho. Mercer tied the game after good attacking play 10 minutes into the second half, and the game was on a knife's edge after with both teams competing hard for the decisive goal. That goal came with a minute left in double overtime when Abby Marra headed home after a free kick into the box from Sage Henry.
Head Coach Mike Rath added, "The girls totally deserve this. They have been exceeding expectations all season and there is a hunger from them to prove doubters wrong. They are having a historic season, especially considering where we were last season and how much everyone has improved and given in order to get us where we are now. We aren't just happy with this Region Title, however, we are looking to compete at Districts now to have a chance to go to Nationals. We have a tough opponent coming up with Anne Arundel, so we will have to be at our best to compete in the way that we want to. This week, we will prepare for that test and I'm really excited to see our girls take another step in the evolution of this program."
Next up for Sussex is the East District Final at Anne Arundel Community College on Friday, November 7.
